The region of Sidi Bel-Abbès was the crucible of a population whom they have practiced grazing and agriculture.
The importance of the river and the density of the alluviums carried encouraged the development of a comprehensive system of
irrigation.
In the XIst century, the region recorded considerable movements of population generated by the thrust of the Banou Hillals and
the domination of the Almoravids.
In the XIVth century, the Spaniards besieged to Oran and wanting to enter inside the country, it was the subject of various
attacks in the region of Sidi Bel-Abbès.
In 1843, the emir started several transactions against the French troops installed close to the Marabout of Sidi Bel-Abbès, on
the strands of the Mekerra.
