Called Sitifis of the time of the Roman, Setif pulls its denomination of the word Berber Esedif, that means "black land".

After the Roman occupation, the region was part of the Maurétanie Césarienne, before Diocletian, in the year 297, its own autonomy under the name of Maurétanie Sitifensis (between the Maurétanie Césarienne and the Numidie) and a prosperous development of which testifies the cities of Cuicul (Djemila) and Mons (close to Fouda).

Invasion of the vandals and earthquake will conjugate themselves to put the city of Setif, which will partially be restored by the Byzantine in 539 down.

Its integration to the arabo-Muslim civilization is marked by the primary role that the Berber tribe of the Koutamas of the region plays, in the foundation of the dynasty of the Fatimideses by the year 904.

One century later, May 8th, 1945, thousands of people are massacred by the colonizers in: Setif, Ain El-Kebira and beni Aziz.

This genocide becomes symbol of sacrifice in struggle for the national independence.
